Carers enjoy Diwali dance and storytelling and other cultural events this November

Carers can take part in Diwali and a range of other cultural celebrations at the Carers Support Centre this November.

Professional dance teacher Anusha Subramanyam will lead Diwali dancing and tell traditional stories of Diwali at the Carers Support Centre on Friday 9 November 2018, 10.30am-12.30pm.

Diwali is the ‘festival of lights’ celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs around the world, and takes place on Wednesday 7 November 2018.

Carers can also enjoy Bonfire Night activities on Monday 5 November 2018, 10.30am-12.30pm. Bonfire Night celebrates the foiling of Guy Fawkes’ plot to blow up parliament in 1605.

To round off the month of celebrations, carers will be treated to Scottish music and food for St Andrews Day on Friday 30 November 2018, 10.30am-12.30pm.

St Andrew’s Day celebrates Scotland’s patron saint, St Andrew, and is a national holiday in Scotland.

There is no need to book for these events, and carers can just turn up on the day.

These events take place as part of a cultural events and wellbeing programme at the Carers Support Centre, funded by a grant from NHS England.

Previous events this year include a carers’ poetry exhibition for World Poetry Day on 21 March, peace anthems for World Peace Day on 21 September, and singing and a book discussion of Andrea Levy’s The Long Song for Black History Month during October.

Anusha Subramanyam said: ‘There was a time when there used to be a festival every day of the year – 365 festivals in a year. The idea behind this was to make our whole life a celebration. Diwali is the day when the dark forces were put to death and light happened.

Come join us in celebrating the light, within us and around us. Hear and join in telling stories, dance and join in the celebration have nibbles with us at the Carers Support Centre.’

Carers can also regularly enjoy creative dance in a range of styles including Bollywood, Belly Dancing and Swing on Friday mornings from 10.30am at the Carers Support Centre.
